If It Feels Like A Song
Story Behind the Song
Song title:If It Feels Like a Song
Written by: Wayward Milne
Written: 8 May 2026
Original inspiration: The moment written words begin to feel like music, and the joy of a song becoming real when other people sing it together.
Musical direction: Upbeat singalong pop anthem with bright chords, handclaps, crowd vocals, chant sections and warm festival energy.
Approximate tempo: 112–122 BPM
Key emotional idea: A song may begin with one writer, but it becomes fully alive when people sing it back and make it their own.
“If It Feels Like a Song” was written on 8 May 2026.
The song came from the strange, joyful moment when words on a page stop feeling like words and begin asking for music.
Sometimes I write lines and they take time.
Sometimes too long.
They sit there unfinished, awkward or nearly right, waiting for something to click.
Then suddenly the rhythm appears.
The feeling arrives.
The words begin to move by themselves.
That is the idea behind “If It Feels Like a Song”.
It is about recognising the moment when a lyric becomes singable — when the emotion finds a rhythm and the writer can feel the song trying to happen.
But the song is also about what happens after it has been written.
One of the most important lines is:
“I’m happy the song’s no longer mine.”
A song is not fully alive simply because one person has finished writing it.
It changes when people sing it back.
It becomes something else when a crowd begins moving as one, when friends smile, when neighbours dance and when strangers put their arms around each other.
People do not always need to know the full story behind a song in order to feel it.
They may not know the reason.
They may not know the pain.
They may not know the details that first created the words.
But if they can sing the same chorus, they can carry some of that feeling together.
That is the deeper meaning beneath the fun.
The lyrics deliberately use repetition, chant sections and simple crowd-friendly phrases because participation is the point.
The song should feel as though people can join in before they know every line.
Sing it.
Sing it.
Sing it.
It knows exactly what it is: a song about singing, a chorus about choruses and a celebration of the moment private words become something shared.
Musically, “If It Feels Like a Song” was shaped as an upbeat singalong pop anthem at around 112–122 BPM.
Bright chords, handclaps, crowd vocals and repeated chant sections create warm festival energy without losing the human feeling at the centre.
The arrangement can sit between pop anthem, festival singalong and communal crowd chant.
It should feel happy, open and welcoming, with enough emotional lift for the chorus to feel like release.
The intro chant lets people join immediately.
The final outro brings the whole idea back around:
If it feels like a song, sing it.
At its heart, the song is about the joy of writing something that wants to be sung — and the even greater joy of hearing it return in other voices.
Because sometimes a song is not fully alive when it is written.
It is fully alive when people sing it.
About the Demos: I write the songs and lyrics myself, then use demo tools to explore the musical feeling, arrangement and production direction.
The demos are not intended to be final finished productions.
They are there to show what the song could become with the right singers, producers, DJs, musicians, arrangers and artists involved.
Original Lyrics
If It Feels Like A Song
Final Lyrics
INTRO CHANT / CROWD HOOK
So, if it feels like a song, sing it
It feels like a song, sing it
Like a song, sing it
Sing it, sing it
Sing it
VERSE 1
I write the lines. It takes time,
Sometimes too long.
Then it clicks, and it feels like heaven.
My heart knows where to begin
So if it feels like a song,
Add some music, and sing it.
CHORUS
If it feels like a song
That you wanna sing along
With a smile and your friends
Try dancing with neighbours
If it feels like a song
You just gotta sing along
Love in the air,
Put arms around strangers
POST-CHORUS / CHANT
It’s a song worth singing
I love when we’re singing
We’re smiling
We’re dancing
We’re singing
It’s a song worth singing
I love when we’re singing
We’re smiling
We’re dancing
We’re singing
VERSE 2
I write the words,
Then I lose them.
Yet everyone knows the lines anyway.
I hear them coming back to me
When crowds start to move as one
I’m happy the song’s no longer mine
I can feel the welling up,
That’s the moment the song has begun
CHORUS
If it feels like a song
That you wanna sing along
With a smile and your friends
Try dancing with neighbours
If it feels like a song
You just gotta sing along
Love in the air,
Put arms around strangers
POST-CHORUS / CHANT
It’s a song worth singing
I love when we’re singing
We’re smiling
We’re dancing
We’re singing
BRIDGE / BUILD
No one needs to know the reason
No one needs to know the pain
No one needs to know the story
When we all sing the same
So put your arm around somebody
Let the chorus carry on
If it feels like it belongs here
Then it feels like a song
FINAL CHORUS
If it feels like a song
That you wanna sing along
With a smile and your friends
Try dancing with neighbours
If it feels like a song
You just gotta sing along
Love in the air,
Put arms around strangers
FINAL CHANT / OUTRO
We’re singing a song about singing
It’s a song worth singing
I love when we’re singing
We’re smiling
We’re dancing
We’re singing a song about singing
It’s a song worth singing
I love when we’re singing
We’re smiling
We’re dancing
So, if it feels like a song, sing it
It feels like a song, sing it
Like a song, sing it
Sing it, sing it
Sing it
