Dippy Eggs

Story Behind the Song

Song title: Dippy Eggs
Written by: Wayward Milne
Written: 7 May 2026
Original inspiration: Paige’s birthday and discovering that, after around eight years of being completely vegan, she still missed dippy eggs — a feeling I immediately understood and shared.
Musical direction: Warm British ukulele-led comedy folk-pop; cheeky, honest and slightly bittersweet, with a close natural British vocal. Not childish and not country.
Approximate tempo: 92 BPM
Key emotional idea: How one simple food can remain emotionally powerful even after your values and way of living have changed, and the connection created by discovering that someone you love feels exactly the same.

“Dippy Eggs” was written on 7 May 2026 for my daughter Paige’s birthday.

The idea began when Paige said that, after around eight years of being completely vegan, she was missing dippy eggs and was going to have some.

That caught my attention because I understood exactly how she felt.

The song is not really about childhood nostalgia in the usual sense, and it is not trying to persuade anyone to change how they eat.

It is about the strange power that one simple food can continue to hold, even after your values, habits and whole way of living have changed.

For both Paige and me, dippy eggs are more than breakfast.

They are the warm yolk, the buttered toast soldiers, the salt, the ritual and the familiar comfort of something we both remember loving.

What made the song worth writing was discovering that Paige felt the same pull that I did.

She had made a serious and lasting choice about how she wanted to live, yet this one small thing had remained in her mind.

I understood that contradiction because I feel it too.

That became the honest centre of “Dippy Eggs”: you can change your diet, follow your principles and leave much of your old way of eating behind, while still missing one particular thing.

The song treats that feeling with humour rather than judgement.

It begins by looking back at eating almost anything, then moves into the plant-based alternatives that replaced the old foods.

But while burgers, ham, roasts and other meals can be left behind, dippy eggs remain the thing that still creeps in.

The humour matters, but there is also something genuine underneath it.

Food can carry memory, family and emotion.

Sometimes the smallest craving can reveal how much of our past remains inside us.

Musically, “Dippy Eggs” was shaped as warm British ukulele-led comedy folk-pop at around 92 BPM.

The bright ukulele, light piano, gentle bass, brushed drums and occasional handclaps keep it playful and easy to sing along with.

The vocal should feel close, natural and British — cheeky without becoming childish, and warm without turning sentimental.

It is not country, and it is not intended as a novelty song.

It is a funny and affectionate confession about temptation, memory and not always being quite as perfect as we planned to be.

At its heart, “Dippy Eggs” began with Paige, but it also became something we shared.

She missed them.

I understood why.

And that was enough to become a song.

It is only breakfast.

But dippy eggs are still the thing we miss the most.

About the Demos: I write the songs and lyrics myself, then use demo tools to explore different musical interpretations, voices, arrangements and production directions.

The demos are not intended to be final finished productions.

They are there to demonstrate what the song could become with the right singers, musicians, producers, arrangers and artists involved.

Original Lyrics

Dippy Eggs

Final Lyrics

INTRO

[Bright ukulele strumming, light piano accents and soft brushed drums]

Oh, dippy eggs
With soldiers standing by

VERSE 1

[Cheeky storytelling vocal]

I used to eat anything
Whatever came my way
Bacon in the morning
Cheese three times a day

Steak on a Sunday
Sausages in bed
I never read the label
I just ate instead

CHORUS

[Catchy, warm and singalong]

Oh, dippy eggs
With soldiers standing by
Buttered, toasted, salted
Like a childhood lullaby

Oh, dippy eggs
You golden little sin
I gave up nearly everything
But you still creep in

SHORT INSTRUMENTAL

[Ukulele strum, light piano answer and soft drum fill]

VERSE 2

[Playful and slightly proud]

Then I found the plants
And I changed my plate
Lentils, beans and tofu
I was doing great

Cashews in the blender
Chickpeas in a tin
Nutritional yeast pretending
It was cheese again

CHORUS

[Bigger singalong]

Oh, dippy eggs
With soldiers standing by
Buttered, toasted, salted
Like a childhood lullaby

Oh, dippy eggs
You golden little sin
I gave up nearly everything
But you still creep in

SHORT INSTRUMENTAL

[Ukulele keeps rhythm, light handclaps and a small piano melody]

VERSE 3

[More honest and emotional]

I don’t miss the burgers
I don’t miss the ham
I can live without a roast
Or a prawn cocktail, damn

But crack that little shell
And watch the yellow run
I’m vegan in my morals
But my memories aren’t done

BRIDGE

[Quieter, sincere and gently comic]

It’s only breakfast
With some toast
But eggs are the thing
I miss the most

FINAL CHORUS

[Emotional but still warm]

Oh, dippy eggs
With soldiers standing by
Buttered, toasted, salted
And a tear in my eye

Oh, dippy eggs
You golden little sin
I left the whole old world behind
But you still creep in

OUTRO

[Soft, funny and tender]

Just one little soldier
Marching to the sun
Dippy eggs, forgive me
I still miss you, hun
